    Approachable and explanatory.

That's the perfect way to describe "The Color of Money" by Michelle Singletary and the reason it is one of the most popular business features in hundreds of newspapers across America. It's also one of the reasons that Singletary was recently awarded one of the top honors a business writer can achieve, an award for outstanding columnist by the Society of American Business Writers and Editors, Inc. (SABEW).

In their comments, the SABEW judges cited several columns in which Singletary served the public interest of her readers and held others accountable for their deceptive practices, included one standout titled, "A Shady Mortgage Lender Exposed." Here is some of the judges' praise:

"Michelle Singletary's work illustrates a range of writing that's both approachable and explanatory. One column that helped a young person sort through choices and what that means to a budget gets close and offers useful information for anyone. Her careful, dogged pursuit of truth is on stage as well. She showed how one man's claims of security and great returns for customers were ether. When she figured out his scheme, she told the tale with a tone of accountability that reminds readers of our public service role. Her coverage of Financial Independence, an unlicensed mortgage firm operating in Maryland, spurred state and federal investigations of the company's founder."

You can read the award winning columns online: A 400 Percent Return in 7 Days? Riiiight. , A Mortgage is for Paying Off , Some Mortgage Originators Skip State Licensing , Maryland Tells Unlicensed Mortgage Firm To Shut Down , The Get-Rich Pitch, Then the Letdown .
